How many treatments will I need?
Most areas require at least 5-6 treatments, but the number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on various factors such as your hair thickness, the area treated, and your hair growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, but actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. Our laser systems work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.
What areas can be treated with Candela GentleLASE & GentleYAG systems?
Our laser systems can remove hair from all parts of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. We treat all area sensitive areas like the chest, areola, and bikini.
What do laser treatments feel like?
With the GentleLASE & GentleYAG, patients will feel a series of short snaps, somewhat like a rubber band snapping. The Candela lasers spray a cooling agent on the skin followed by mild warmth of the laser pulse. Typically no local anesthesia or pain medication is required. However, some patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.
What happens after the treatment?
Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be re-growth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment, and are not re-growing. Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.
Is it safe?
The beauty of these technologies is that they effectively destroy the hair itself without harming the surrounding skin. You may be a little red afterward, but that typically goes away in a matter of hours. As with all medical procedures, there is a slight degree of risk, and we will discuss this with you thoroughly when you come in for your consultation.
Can anyone have it done?
Laser or light-based system cannot treat blonde, white, red or gray hair since there is no melanin in it to absorb the light. With our GentleYAG system, people with any other color hair, any skin type and even tanned skin can receive treatments. On the other hand, a good candidate for the GentleLASE is someone with pale to medium skin tone that wants to treat hair that is fine or light brown. We will evaluate if you are an appropriate candidate at the time of your consultation.
Why choose our laser systems over other laser hair removal systems?
Our Candela GentleLASE & GentleYAG technology is considered the gold standard in the laser industry because of its long history of safety and effectiveness on all skin types. These are true lasers versus IPL’s (Intense Pulse Light) which mimic laser but their effective is substantially reduced in hair removal, thus requiring additional treatments for desired results. The Candela laser systems can rapidly treat large areas without the limitations of older technologies.
The GentleLASE system's shorter wavelength (755 nm) allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with light or medium skin (skin type I to III). The GentleYAG system's longer wavelength (1064 nm) allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with light or dark skin as well as tanned skin. For both systems cool cryogen spray is used to increases patient comfort and minimizes the adverse skin reaction commonly seen with other lasers.
